One million have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes in England
Did you know that a staggering one million people in the UK are potentially living with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes?
Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that around one million of us are living with Type 2 diabetes but are completely unaware of it, which unfortunately puts our health at risk.
Equally shocking is that the gathered data suggests around five million of us are “pre-diabetic”. This means that your blood glucose levels are higher than usual, but not sufficiently high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2, and usually does present with noticeable symptoms. Nevertheless, experts are concerned and have emphasised the urgency of awareness and early detection. This reinforces the need for accessible approaches to assist with early detection, as well as solutions that provide a user-friendly way to regularly measure glucose levels.
Typically, people living with Type 1 diabetes are given Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) to track and maintain their glucose levels within the so-called healthy range, whereas people living with Type 2 are generally advised to make lifestyle changes.
At NIQS, our mission is developing affordable and accessible glucose monitors for all; whether that be assisting with early detection or supporting people living with Type 1/Type 2 diabetes in their glycemic control.
